The caliphs of the Banu Abbas served as heads of the Muslim community for a period of five centuries (from 750 CE until the sack of Baghdad in 1258 CE). This was the Abbasid caliphate. ==Ancestry== Banu Abbas are descended from Abd Allah ibn Abbas, one of Muhammad's companions (as well as his cousin) and one of the early Qur'an scholars.
